United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America

The United States Department of Labor predicts a dramatic shortfall in our nation's industry workforce over the next five years. At the same time, 80 percent of our soldiers leaving the military are in need of a good job, with good benefits, to provide a stable environment for their family.

Providing a solution to both problems is the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC), in a partnership with the national Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) program. As the leading provider of jobs for members of our country's military veterans in the H2H program, the UBC places military veterans into productive, challenging work environments every day.

The UBC is answering the call with training and placement. Federal- and state-approved apprenticeship programs are offered. Hands-on training is offered by qualified journey-level workers, and special consideration for apprenticeship placement is given to veterans, so no experience is necessary.

Military veterans participating in the H2H program benefit from a defined career path: They are placed in an apprenticeship that leads to a journey-level status; they work under a collective bargaining agreement for wages; they receive benefits, typically including family health care and retirement benefits; and they have lifelong learning opportunities.

About the UBC and the H2H Program

The Carpenters Union is more than a half million of highly skilled men and women throughout the construction industry. The UBC represents and offers training to North America's carpenters, cabinetmakers, millwrights, piledrivers, lathers, framers, floorlayers, drywall hangers, and workers in forest-products and related industries. The UBC is one of the oldest trade unions in the United States. And, from foremen to the general president, UBC leaders are forward-thinking, driven professionals.

The UBC's H2H program provides our nation's military veterans with challenging careers in carpentry and a source of security for them and their family in the form of healthcare, retirement and financial stability.

When veterans join the UBC's H2H program, they receive credit for service experience. Based on the military occupation code (MOC), a veteran can leverage training and work-related experience during his or her time in the service, in order to achieve advanced placement in the UBC's apprenticeship program.

And, the UBC offers coast-to-coast opportunities: Because the carpenters union is one of the largest and most far-reaching trades unions in the country, veterans have the freedom to choose where they'd like to work. UBC contractors across the country are in constant need of union carpenters.

Once veterans are UBC members, they have an ongoing avenue for career advancement. Several career training programs are offered, which can propel them to whatever level they wish.

Of course, financial stability is part of the package. Top pay rates and healthy pension plans provide peace

of mind for today and tomorrow. And, the UBC's healthcare and other benefit programs provide shelter and peace of mind to the veteran and his or her family, 24/7.
